In proton therapy facilities, high-energy neutron fields are generated as a consequence of (p,Xn) nuclear interactions. UPM has designed and manufactured, for these facilities, a new flexible and passive neutron area monitor with two configurations: extended-range and conventional. The conceptual design phase of this monitor is reported in this work, presenting the main functional and technical features of the monitor, including the response functions of its two configurations. These response functions are compared with those of some widely-used monitors.
