Esta investigación explora la interacción entre estructura y arquitectura, destacando la influencia que tienen las decisiones estructurales en los proyectos arquitectónicos. El estudio parte de una base teórica sobre la relación entre estructura y arquitectura, que se centra en dos aspectos fundamentales: el grado de influencia (la medida en que la estructura forma parte del proceso de diseño) y la manifestación (la relevancia visual y espacial que adquieren las estructuras en el proyecto final). Con esta base se examinan 48 proyectos recientes de arquitectos de renombre, analizando parámetros relacionados con la estructura, como el grado de influencia, su manifestación, el material de los elementos portantes o los retos estructurales que presentan. Este análisis permite extraer conclusiones e identificar tendencias sobre el papel que desempeñan las estructuras en la arquitectura actual y si se integran o no en la concepción arquitectónica como herramienta creativa, mas allá de sus funciones técnicas.
En una segunda fase, se seleccionan tres casos de estudio (The Leadenhall Building, Centre Pompidou y Mossbourne Community Academy) para profundizar en las implicaciones de las decisiones estructurales. Para cada uno de ellos se plantea un escenario alternativo en el que se construyen con un material distinto al original. Tras un análisis de las condiciones arquitectónicas iniciales y la solución estructural adoptada, se llevan a cabo unos cálculos basados en el material y en la normativa del país del proyecto que permitan establecer la viabilidad técnica y constructiva de la nueva propuesta. Se estudian también aspectos como la fabricación, el transporte, las uniones o la protección contra el fuego. Todas estas variables se sintetizan en una comparación que permita evaluar cuál sería la influencia de esta hipotética solución estructural en la percepción espacial del proyecto. Este trabajo combina una aproximación técnica, pero también visual y conceptual, que invita a reflexionar sobre como las decisiones estructurales no solo afectan a aspectos técnicos, sino que también pueden llegar a definir la imagen y la identidad de la arquitectura.
This research explores the interaction between structure and architecture, highlighting the influence that structural decisions have on architectural projects. The study starts setting a theoretical basis on the relationship between structure and architecture, focusing on two fundamental aspects: the degree of influence (the extent to which the structure is part of the design process), and the manifestation (the visual and spatial relevance that structures acquire in the final project). On this basis, 48 recent projects by renowned architects are examined, analyzing structure-related parameters such as the degree of influence, their manifestation, the material of the load-bearing elements or the structural challenges they present. This analysis allows conclusions to be drawn and trends to be identified on the role played by structures in architecture today and whether or not they are integrated into the architectural conception as a creative tool, beyond their technical functions.
In a second phase, three case studies (The Leadenhall Building, Centre Pompidou and Mossbourne Community Academy) are selected to explore the implications of structural decisions. For each of them, an alternative scenario is proposed in which they are built with a different material than the original one. After an analysis of the initial architectural conditions and the structural solution adopted, calculations based on the material and the regulations of the country of the project are carried out to establish the technical and constructive feasibility of the new proposal. Aspects such as fabrication, transport, joints or fire protection are also studied. All these variables are synthesized in a comparison to evaluate the influence of this hypothetical structural solution on the spatial perception of the project. This work combines a technical approach, but also a visual and conceptual one, which invites us to reflect on how structural decisions not only affect technical aspects, but can also come to define the image and identity of the architecture.
