When some external and unexpected event appears in a face-to-face university, teachers and students must adapt to it. New methods arise to improve the teaching and learning process in this new situation. All the subjects cannot be treated the same way but, in the end, technology is found useful. We can neither forget the emotional and motivational aspects.
To face the study, we will analyse the most relevant educational principles to point out the teaching and learning process and the relation between teachers and students.Next, we will present the modalities of Spanish university such as face-toface and distance learning. We will also mention the response to the confinement due to COVID-19 of two universities, one online and the other in person.
The Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) is most affected by this situation as it is a face-to-face university. Therefore, it is interesting to know its characteristics to better understand the difficulties that arise when adapting to an exceptional situation. We propose a case study to analyse the situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim is integrating all the inputs observed during these months to deal with a proposal to improve online teaching in a face-to-face university. ‘The case study method allows to keep the holistic and meaningful characteristics of real-life events’ (Yin, 2003: 2).
On the one hand, teachers can imagine that they can transmit the principal contents online, but our students expect a different relationship between all actors. On the other hand, through a survey, we want to know about our students’ feelings and experience lived in the specific subjects we taught. This survey, together with the theoretical framework, leads us to the discussion. Conclusions relate to personal relations and not so much with purely academic subjects. The purpose is to find recommendations to deal with in next study year.
