The project of 6 social housing units in Mallorca is an interesting example of the possibilities and potential of stone structures nowadays. It considers a contemporary application of the classical systems of design, analysis and construction of masonry structures, by the use of local, low-carbon materials (marés stone, but also timber, Neptune grass.. ….) and traditional construction systems, thus satisfying current requirements and needs. The paper presents the configuration and design of the project, with special emphasis on structural design and analysis (marés stone vaults with upper tie-rod, king post type timber trusses), and proposes a design philosophy based in building with the local available resources.
