En Berlín, los clubes de techno no son simplemente un espacio al que se le asigna un uso; forman parte de un contexto histórico que deja una ciudad a reconstruir, un Berlín vaciado que encaja perfectamente con lo que esta escena techno representa: libertad, expresión, creatividad y resistencia. Se toman espacios como fábricas abandonadas o antiguos edificios industriales, con o sin proyecto de arquitectura, o rehabilitaciones basadas en lo preexistente para desarrollar una escena que, en muchos casos, es imposible replicar fuera de esta ciudad.
Este trabajo estudia los recursos espaciales y sensoriales que configuran la experiencia laberíntica en los clubes de techno de Berlín. A partir del análisis de seis clubes representativos, se categorizan aspectos arquitectónicos tangibles e intangibles, como la forma de los espacios, la iluminación, el sonido o el recorrido, que contribuyen a generar sensaciones de desorientación, inmersión y pertenencia. Se busca no solo estudiar la arquitectura de estos espacios, sino también rendir homenaje a lo que representan dentro y fuera de sus muros. Este trabajo es una representación gráfica y escrita, que documenta la arquitectura de la escena efímera y actual de la ciudad de Berlín, y surge de un entendimiento del sentido que esta cultura tiene y de todo lo que su arquitectura engloba.
In Berlin, techno clubs are not merely spaces assigned a specific use; they are part of a historical context that reveals a city left to be rebuilt, an emptied-out Berlin that perfectly aligns with what the techno scene represents: freedom, expression, creativity, and resistance. Spaces such as abandoned factories or former industrial buildings are repurposed, with or without architectural projects, or rehabilitated based on the preexisting structures to develop a scene that, in many cases, is impossible to replicate outside this city.
This work studies the spatial and sensory resources that shape the labyrinthine experience in Berlin’s techno clubs. Through the analysis of six representative venues, it categorizes both tangible and intangible architectural aspects, such as spatial form, lighting, sound, and circulation, that contribute to generating feelings of disorientation, immersion, and belonging. The aim is not only to examine the architecture of these spaces but also to pay tribute to what they represent both within and beyond their walls. This work is a visual and written documentation of the architecture of Berlin’s ephemeral and contemporary techno scene, emerging from an understanding of its meaning and everything that its architecture encompasses.
